This page is divided into two basic sections. The top section lists plates from the 13 jurisdictions of Canada in alphabetical order (if I have any). Below the section on Canada are plates from the 51 jurisdictions of the United States in alphabetical order (including the District of Columbia). For each jurisdiction ordinary standard-issue plates for privately-owned passenger cars are listed first, then non-passenger or specialty plates (such as truck, trailer, taxi, environmental, college, etc.). If nothing is listed from a place you're looking for that means I don't have a plate from there. If a particular state or section gets too long I may break it off onto a separate page. In such cases a link will be shown where that jurisdiction would normally fall.

| In April 2020 Arizona suspended its very sensible AAA 0000 numbering pattern and began issuing a nonsensical 7-digit pattern that is a mishmash of letters and numbers. Some states, especially Missouri, issue a mixture of letters and numbers but Arizona's 2020 "alphabet soup" system was notable because the plate number does not progress in a sensible pattern. Typically plate numbers progress from right to left, like a car's odometer. Number ABC 1234 would be followed by ABC 1235 or A23-FGH would be followed by A24-FGH (where the numbers change before any letters do). However Arizona's 2020 system did not progress in an easily-identifiable manner. Plate numbers like E5A2A4A and 91A5ATA were observed by plate collectors in Arizona. It took a while but plate collectors did finally decipher the system and identified the order that plate numbers progress. It may be idiotic, but there is a system! The 2020 system explained: Each position can be either a letter or number with the exception of position 4, which is always a number. The progression of each position (excepting position 4) runs from A through Z (skipping I, O, Q and U) then the numbers zero through nine. What complicates things, though, is the order that the positions change. The first character to increment is in position 4, eg ABC8DEF would be followed by ABC9DEF. That you might expect since position 4 is always a number. But once position 4 reaches "9" it is position 2 that increments. In other words AAA9AAA is followed by ABA0AAA. Crazy, isn't it? After position 2 reaches "9" (remember, it will run from A through Z, then "0" through "9") position 6 will increment. For example D9A9BVA would be followed by DAA0BWA. Imagine trying to remember that plate number if you've witnessed a bank robbery! After position 6 reaches "9" then it is position 1 which changes. After position 1 reaches "9", then position 5 changes. After position 5 reaches "9", then position 3 changes. Finally after position 3 reaches "9" then position 7 would change. Whoever dreamt up this sytem needs to have their head examined. To summarize, this is the order that the positions increment, from the first to change to the last: 4 - 2 - 6 - 1 - 5 - 3 - 7. In a normal AAA 0000 pattern this order would be 7 - 6 - 5 - 4 - 3 - 2 - 1. For a summary of this system ALPCA members can see the article expaining it in the February 2021 issue of Plates Magazine. The 2020 system revised: After just over nine months of use, in early 2021 this crazy 7-digit system was modified. It was cut down to use six digits but the same strange order of progression continues. Using six characters the order that the positions increment is now 4 - 2 - 5 - 1 - 6 - 3. Any plate number in these crazy systems can be unscrambled into a more normal odometer-like plate number. For example if LBA9AMA were unscrambled it would be number AAALMB9 or if P7A 9HP were undscrambled it would be number APP H79. Stickered 1998 on backdated 1998 base, vvg (# 211 KNF, Chatham County) $6 Georgia introduced staggered-monthly registration in 1997 and had a general reissue of plates at that time. Their new plates had a screened "98" in the lower-right corner. All renewals from 1996 recieved this new plate with a month sticker indicating when their plate expired in 1998. Georgia also has an ad valorem tax which is paid when a registration is purchased. During 1997 when a new vehicle was purchased the purchaser had the option of paying this ad valorem tax only through the registrants assigned month of expiration. In such cases the plate issued shows the month through which the tax had been paid. This created an unusual variety in Georgia plates, a 1998 baseplate backdated to 1997, then renewed to 1998 with a 98 sticker. |

This same plate is shown under those states. Prorate plates with trailer stickers are rather uncommon. The vast majority of prorate plates seen are from the power unit (truck tractor). ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ Prorate backing plates were issued in states which were members of the Western Proration Agreement from the 1950s to the 1980s. The Western Compact, as it was commonly called, was an agreement between states to simplify commercial truck and bus registration for vehicles which commonly traveled in multiple states. Rather than requiring full commercial vehicle registration in each state, a fee proration agreement was reached. Proof of registration was an annual sticker placed on these backing plates which were displayed on buses, the front of truck tractors or the rear of semi-trailers.
