The plates shown in the photographs may or may not be a photo of the actual plate that is for sale!! If a plate number is listed in the description then the picture shown is the actual plate for sale. Otherwise the plate(s) for sale will be the same design but may have a different plate number.

This page is divided into two basic sections. The top section lists plates from the 13 jurisdictions of Canada in alphabetical order (if I have any). Below the section on Canada are plates from the 51 jurisdictions of the United States in alphabetical order (including the District of Columbia). For each jurisdiction ordinary standard-issue plates for privately-owned passenger cars are listed first, then non-passenger or specialty plates (such as truck, trailer, taxi, environmental, college, etc.). If nothing is listed from a place you're looking for that means I don't have a plate from there. If a particular state or section gets too long I may break it off onto a seperate page. In such cases a link will be shown where that jurisdiction would normally fall.

During the Depression a few states issued what are called locking strip plates. The purpose was to prevent theft since so many people could not afford to register their vehicles. The top of the plate had a slot into which a seperate strip bearing the date was inserted after the plate had been bolted onto the vehicle. The strip covered the bolts, preventing theft. The strip had tabs on it which would prevent the strip from being pulled back out once the strip was inserted into the slot. This prevented the plate from being taken off the car once it was attached. The plate and strip at left are what are for sale. The plate at right is shown only as an illustration of what the assembled plate and strip look like. |
